Credit Cards For College Kids a Good Idea?

There always seems to be something that comes along that is supposedly another good way to make life easier. Being as most of us live fast paced life styles we jump on these opportunities. When it comes to sending the kids off to college we may be under the misconception that life will be a little less fast paced which may be true, but the responsibilities towards our young college students is no less, especially when it comes to finances.

Now the credit card companies are leading us to believe that giving our young people a credit card to use as they see fit while away at school is doing us all a big favor. Now that's like taking a little one into a candy store and saying help yourself its free! College students are usually just not financially mature enough as yet to handle a credit card responsibly. Gosh, most seasoned adults can't even accomplish this, and that's why there is a huge number of people, a good majority of them parents, that are in real financial trouble.

It is easy to lose perception of doing the right thing when it comes to teaching the kids about finances when you are in financial difficulty yourself. It's a big concern sending the kids off to college, and then worrying if you are going to have money always available to send them quickly if they run into trouble. You have enough problems just gathering the money together for the month end bills now. Giving them one of these credit cards may seem to you like a great idea because they will always have it for an emergency. Except you may be forgetting that there will be a whole lot of emergencies arising while your young person is away on campus. For example, Friday night is pizza night and a few of the kids without credit cards can't afford to go, so this is an emergency that your student will handle by paying for the lot.

Is It Time For Help?

It simply boils down to that whatever the limit the credit card has that you are giving to a young person appears to them as cash at their disposal.
